The power output of all the standard Series Land Rover engines, with the exception of the V8, is pretty poor by modern standards. The cooling system plays a major part in affecting the performance until the engine has reached its optimum working temperature. This often takes surprisingly long in cooler weather, due to the over engineering of the system to cope with the vehicle being able to stand stationary for long periods of time and drive various machinery via an optional power take-off attachment. The problem is less noticeable on Series III vehicles as they were fitted with a smaller radiator as standard.
