The DVLA first began issuing Q plates on 1st August 1983. They will issue a vehicle with a Q prefix registration if:

The age of the vehicle cannot be proved.

OR

The vehicle is built from parts from several other vehicles with no one vehicle being the dominant donor.

A Q plate cannot be transfered to another vehicle and the Q plate cannot be exchanged for another registration.
