Series Land Rover diesel engine

Series I Land Rovers were first fitted with the 2052cc diesel engine in 1957 (overhead valves and roller tappets). the engine gave 52bhp at 3500rpm. Torque 87ft lb at 2000rpm. Maximum speed was 53mph and fuel economy was up to 35mpg.

Owners soon complained of lack of sufficient power and this lead to the development of the 2.25 litre diesel engine that was introduced with the Series IIA Land Rover in late 1961. It was based on the 2.25 litre petrol block used in the Series II Land Rover and had the same 3 bearing format for the crankshaft and with the same cylinder bore and piston stroke. Torque was increased to 103lb/ft at 1800rpm. Fuel economy dropped to 22mpg.

As with the 3-bearing petrol engine, the 3-bearing diesel sometimes suffered from a bent crankshaft at high revs. So a 5-bearing version was fitted to Series III Land Rovers from 1980 to 1984.
