Series 2/2A Land Rover Basic Specifications

Basic specifications of the Series II/IIA models did not differ much from the late Series I models. Changes made were often due to demands from owners for more load carrying capacity and better overall performance.

Vehicle load capacities

Model
Min unladen weight
Max allowable weight
88inch 1958-61 2900lb(1315kg) 4453lb(2020kg)
109inch 1958-61 3294lb(1494kg) 5905lb(2678kg)
88inch 1961-71 2953lb(1339kg) 4453lb(2020kg)
109inch 1961-71 3301lb(1497kg) 5905lb(2678kg)
109inch (6-cyl) 3459lb(1569kg) 5905lb(2678kg)
109inch (‘1 ton’) 3886lb1763kg) 6750lb(3062kg)
The ‘payload’ is the load(excluding the driver & 1 passenger) that the vehicle may reasonably be expected to carry comfortably cross-country. It is generally around 1000lb(460kg) throughout the model range, except for the 1500lb(680kg) of the 109inch ‘1 ton’.

Fluid capacities

Engine size

2286cc

Radiator

2.6 US gal(die)
3.0 US gal
Engine sump (including filter)
1.9 US gal

Gearbox

Swivel hubs
1.2 US pints
1.2 US pints
Differential Rover Env
3.5 US pints (front) 2.5 US pints (front)
3.5 US pints (rear) 3.1 US pints (rear)

Fuel tanks
All fuel tank capacities, both petrol & diesel, are 12 US gal(45litre) except for the 109in 6cyl & 109in Station Wagon, which are 19 US gal(73litre)

Turning circle
88inch 42ft(12.8m)
109inch 48ft(14.6m)
Larger tyres increase the turning circle. If larger tyres are fitted then turning circle may be reduced again by adding wheel spacers as these allow more lateral movement of the wheels without fouling the leaf springs.

Fuel consumption
88inch 2286cc petrol 15mpg (US)
88inch 2286cc diesel 24mpg (US)
109inch 2286cc petrol 15mpg (US)
109inch 2286cc diesel 23mpg (US)
109inch 2625cc petrol 12mpg (US)
Sustained urban use will lower these figures. Use of four-wheel drive dramatically reduces them.
