Series I Land Rovers show more specification changes than the later Series II & III models. This is perhaps to be expected since Land Rovers were a new concept vehicle and reported problems had to be resolved by design changes. Land Rover owners were continuously requesting more load capacity and greater engine power and the specification changes reflect responses to these requests.

Vehicle load capacities

Vehicle‘payload’ is the load(excluding the driver and 1 passenger) that the vehicle may reasonably be expected to carry comfortably cross-country. It is generally around 1000lb(460kg) throughout the Series 1 model range.

Sustained urban use will lower these figures. Use of four-wheel drive dramatically reduces them.
