The purpose of these is to restrict the downward movement of the axle when on very uneven ground. They prevent possible damage to shock absobers and springs. They were fitted to both civilian and military land rovers. By removing them greater axle articulation can be achieved but greater care should be taken when driving over very undulating ground.
