Torque Settings: Series I & II Land Rover Engines

Torque wrench

The bolts that hold the parts of a Series Land Rover engine together do this by friction alone, nothing else. When you tighten a nut and bolt more, then their surfaces come more closely in contact and the friction is increased. The threads of the nut and bolt carry the frictional stress and if they are stressed excessively it is possible for them to shear, causing friction to decrease and the nut or bolt to lose grip. It is therefore important to the use the toque wrench to control the stress on threads.
Series Land Rover engines have their critical torque wrench settings available in the appropriate workshop manuals. In general, the greater the diameter of the bolt and the finer its thread then the greater the torque the bolts can take without the thread shearing.
It is generally true that the length of a spanner is related to the amount of stress that can be applied to that particular size nut or bolt. Having said that, it is not possible to exert the required torque with an ordinary spanner for the cylinderhead bolts, however, an extension bar should't be used because it isn't possible to gauge the stress you are applying. Torque wrenches capable of exerting 100+Nm are longer than ordinary spanners to facilitate the high torque needed.
